WGM Engineering – Health & Safety Conference 2018

“Safety and Well-being are at the heart of everything we do, meaning that we all go home safe and well.” – Ian Mathieson, Managing Director.

Statistics issued by the Health & Safety Executive detailed that between 2017/2018, 144 people were killed at their work. With this in mind, on November 2nd we held our first ever Health, Safety & Wellbeing conference. The purpose; to raise awareness for not only physical health but also mental health.

Our event featured presentations from Mark Dickson (Scottish Water, Capital Investment Director), Martin Bradbury (WGM Engineering, Chairman), Kris Kelly from the Scottish Association of Mental Health (SAMH) and a very moving safety presentation from Gary Gallagher whom himself has experienced the impact of a health and safety incident which went wrong. WGM not only commit, we promise, that we will deliver an environment where health, safety and well-being are paramount and everyone returns home from work safely.

Charging your EV Knowledge…

WGM Engineering is experts in selection, design, installation and commissioning for EV, prioritising safety at all times. As an OLEV approved Electrical Vehicle installer, we are significant contributors to the implementation of EV Charging infrastructure in Scotland. We are committed to delivering the government lead renewable objectives over the coming years and to meet the UK’s commitment to emission reduction. Our clients comment on the complexity regards installing EV from correct product selection through to safe and efficient installation.

Like many, you may not be aware of the full variety of electric vehicles available. For employees who own a company vehicle, HMRC ‘benefit in kind’ will soon recognise car battery charging range. As part of the WGM service, we can provide technical advice regarding product selection as part of our tailored service.

What is the difference between EVs, PHEVs and E-REVs?

A vehicle powered solely by a battery charged from mains electricity. Currently, typical pure-electric cars have a range in excess of 80 miles with many of the newest travelling even further. As with conventional motoring, driving style, speed and air conditioning/heating use can reduce the range available. Current models include Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Renault Zoe and Kia Soul.

PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid EV)

A vehicle with a plug-in battery and an internal combustion engine powered by petrol or diesel. Typical PHEVs will have a pure-electric range of up to 30 miles. The benefit of these vehicles is that once the electric battery is depleted, journeys can still continue in hybrid mode. This gives a range in excess of 300 miles. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Audi e-Tron and VW Golf GTE are all current examples of such technology.

E-REV (Extended Range EV)

These are a version of plug-in hybrids, with the vehicle powered by a battery with a petrol or diesel powered generator on board. With an E-REV the propulsion technology is always electric and range can be between 150-300 miles. The Vauxhall Ampera and BMW i3 (with optional range-extender) are two such examples.

Converting to an electrical fleet will not only reduce your companies carbon footprint but demonstrate to your customers a commitment to the environment.
