Like many, you may not be aware of the full variety of electric vehicles available. For employees who own a company vehicle, HMRC ‘benefit in kind’ will soon recognise car battery charging range. What is the difference between EVs, PHEVs and E-REVs?

EV

A vehicle powered solely by a battery charged from mains electricity. Currently, typical pure-electric cars have a range in excess of 80 miles with many of the newest travelling even further. As with conventional motoring, driving style, speed and air conditioning/heating use can reduce the range available. Current models include Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Renault Zoe and Kia Soul.

PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid EV)

A vehicle with a plug-in battery and an internal combustion engine powered by petrol or diesel. Typical PHEVs will have a pure-electric range of up to 30 miles. The benefit of these vehicles is that once the electric battery is depleted, journeys can still continue in hybrid mode. This gives a range in excess of 300 miles. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Audi e-Tron and VW Golf GTE are all current examples of such technology.

E-REV (Extended Range EV)

These are a version of plug-in hybrids, with the vehicle powered by a battery with a petrol or diesel powered generator on board. With an E-REV the propulsion technology is always electric and range can be between 150-300 miles. The Vauxhall Ampera and BMW i3 (with optional range-extender) are two such examples.

WGM & Scottish Water – Dalmarnock WwTW

WGM Engineering has been working on a multi-phase, multi-million-pound project at Dalmarnock Wastewater Treatment Works which will deliver essential upgrades to the infrastructure affecting the surrounding areas in the east end of Glasgow. The works were installed in the late 1960s and as such the site requires significant investment to enable it to deal with modern day – and future – challenges. Working in synergy with designers Wood, contracted by Scottish Water, the necessary surveys and tests were carried out to enable the specification for the replacement of the existing large shaft driven pumps with new dry well submersible models. In addition to the pumps themselves, a new MCC is currently under construction on the site of previous buildings which were required to be demolished.

With the demolishing of existing buildings, major groundworks, construction of three new buildings and the procurement and installation of the equipment – Switchgear, Transformers and MCC -housed in these buildings, efficient management of the project is vital to ensure effective organisation between the many interfaces, both internal and external. In addition, Scottish Water daily operations and the 1A phase of the project has been running concurrently on site, with another Tier 1 Managed Delivery contractor having a constant presence. This requires thorough planning and communication to ensure efficiency and safety throughout the site.

On Thursday 16th of August, both Senior Leadership Teams from WGM and Scottish Water met to monitor the progress of the project and highlighted not only the excellent partnership but the triumphant success achieved within this project so far.

Scottish Water Chief Executive, Douglas Millican, stated: “Great to see the strong collaboration by Waste Water Operations with WGM Engineering and George Leslie in delivering these important upgrades.”
