Innovative Aeration Ditch Cleaning Trial by WGM Engineering and Enva
WGM in collaboration with Enva and Enva Ireland are carrying out a trial clean of an aeration ditch in Maybole for Scottish Water. The aeration ditch remains in full operation and the objective of this trial is to complete the clean without disrupting the existing process.
Throughout the project, uninterrupted operation remained our biggest challenge as disruption could lead to inefficiencies and potential downtime, impacting the overall functionality of the system.
Project Overview
WGM Engineering engaged in extensive discussions with Enva Ireland, drawing upon their experience with a similar project. The solution proposed involved the utilisation of innovative technology including a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) – the Gerrotto robotic mini excavator, vibrating filter sludge screener, and pumps.
The ROV was both efficient and effective in displacing sediment, grit, and rags from the aeration ditch bottom. This debris was then filtered through the sludge screener and returned as liquid to the inlet works – all without disrupting the existing process.
By successfully finding a solution to cleaning the aeration ditch while it remains in operation, the project avoids the need for costly and disruptive measures such as isolating the ditch and bringing in temporary equipment. This approach minimises resource consumption, reducing the environmental footprint associated with construction activities.
Ongoing Operations
Despite being in its early stages the trial has shown promising initial sampling results. As the cleaning process progresses, the team remains committed to evaluating its success and will complete a comprehensive clean of the entire ditch if proven successful.
The collaborative effort between Scottish Water, WGM, Enva, and Enva Ireland showcases our commitment to innovation and problem-solving within the field of wastewater management underscoring our commitment to sustainability. The ongoing trial represents the importance of strategic partnerships and technological innovation in addressing complex engineering challenges.
Note: The trail clean was completed on 23/02/2024 with further updates anticipated.
