Cleaning and Preparation
Successful composite repairs rely on thorough and effective surface preparation. All affected leg sections were inspected prior to the commencement of works.
Existing coatings, corrosion products, contaminants and loose material were removed using mechanical preparation methods to achieve a clean, sound substrate. Surface profiling was then carried out to ensure optimum adhesion of the repair materials.
Following preparation, all surfaces were cleaned and inspected to confirm they met the required standard prior to application.
Plate Bonding
Where additional strengthening was required, steel reinforcement plates were installed using Belzona 1212, a high-performance, rapid-curing epoxy adhesive designed for metal bonding.
The adhesive was applied to each plate before placement, allowing the plates to be accurately aligned and securely bonded. This approach created a strong structural connection without the need for welding or hot work permits.
This method enabled a safer installation process while reducing both programme time and the risks associated with traditional welded repairs.
Carbon Fibre Repairs
To further strengthen compromised areas and restore load-bearing capability, a composite wrap system was installed using Belzona 1981 in conjunction with SuperWrap carbon fibre reinforcement.
Belzona 1981 acted as the resin, impregnating the SuperWrap material prior to controlled application around the support legs. Multiple layers were applied where required to meet the specified reinforcement design.
This system provides a lightweight, high-strength solution that enhances structural performance while offering excellent resistance to corrosion and environmental exposure.
Topcoat
Upon completion of the structural repairs, a final topcoat of Belzona 5811 was applied across the repaired areas to encapsulate the composite system and deliver a uniform protective finish.
The coating enhances environmental resistance, seals exposed surfaces and provides an additional barrier against moisture ingress and future corrosion.
