Replacement of Hypochlorite Tanks
Our Projects team successfully managed a complex project at Milngavie WTW involving the replacement of 3 Hypochlorite Tanks, initially prompted by Tank B’s leakage of Hypo into the chemical bund.
The work involved implementing a temporary solution to keep the supply of Hypo to a required level which was achieved by utilising a temporary tank since September 2022. To maintain required Hypo levels on site, WGM’s mechanical team diligently managed weekly transfers of the Hypo solution since the delivery of the tank.
During the design phase of replacing Tank B, Tank C began to operate at 50% capacity, prompting the decision to replace all three tanks. The current pipework extended over the top of all three tanks, therefore, to allow for the tanks to be successfully removed it was necessary to reroute all of the pipework. This involved the mechanical install for the new pipe routes, chlorination, flushing and sampling over a 10-week period for optimal functionality.
Once prepared, the roof was removed from Milngavie Hypo Room, with Tank B removed and the new Tank installed. Following the install, we carried out chlorination, flushing, and sampling before bringing the tank to full operation. Finally, a temporary roof was installed to allow easier access for the removal of Tank A & C. Tank C has now also been successfully replaced, awaiting sample results before also being brought into full operation.
Significant challenges were overcome during the project with exceptional efforts from WGM’s Site Manager and Engineers in maintaining project timelines, promptly addressing concerns, and finding effective solutions.
The most significant project challenges revolved around effectively coordinating multiple subcontractors. Throughout each phase of tank removal, Summit Solutions, Onestop, Leggat Crane Hire, and SGB Scaffolding were on site with the crucial delivery of tanks coming from Forbes. Further complexity was added by the need for scaffolding modifications at various staged due to the spatial constraints within the room.
