Community Involvement

Striving to make a positive impact on our communities

WGM aims to have a positive impact on its community by making meaningful connections with its clients, partners and neighbours. We recognise that being involved in our community provides benefits for the individuals and organisations we are helping and is also hugely rewarding for WGM team members.

As part of the WGM sustainability action plan set out annually, we actively look for opportunities to support local community initiatives and charities, be they short-term or one-off projects or long-term collaborative relationships with local community groups. Recent community-based projects include the RDA Glasgow Group, a local horse-riding facility that caters for disabled riders, and the Preshal Trust, a registered charity based in Glasgow that supports individuals and families suffering from the effects of social exclusion. We also donated surplus materials from a recent project to assist in reinstating the footpaths in a community park on the south side of Glasgow.

Volunteering

WGM’s employee volunteering policy entitles each employee to volunteer one day to support a cause or organisation of their choice. The volunteering day can either be used individually to support a charity close to an employee’s heart or as part of a team effort to support a larger community project. As the business continues to expand, we are seeking every opportunity to strengthen and develop the workforce by providing opportunities in the communities we operate. This includes continuing to grow our successful apprenticeship programme, which will expand over the next five years.

At WGM, we understand the impact our actions have on the wider community, and we are committed to improving our social and corporate responsibility. Our goal is to develop a motivated, satisfied and diverse workforce, where every employee is treated fairly and equitably and has opportunities for career progression. We place great importance on employee wellbeing, and we have a growing number of qualified mental health first aiders. We have active employee engagement, wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) groups that meet regularly and share ideas at our employee-led People Steering Group. Members of the WGM wellbeing group recently took part in a pedometer challenge, which promoted wellbeing and raised money for The Lighthouse Club, a charity that supports the wellbeing of construction workers.
